Friday, July 26 . Pre-season Friendly
Tiverton Town v Truro City
Ian Moorcroft Stadium . 7.30pm
TRURO are a club riding on the crest of a wave at the moment.
After returning to Cornwall after a lengthy absence and a few ground shares, they will be playing their football in a new high tech stadium this season, having maintained their National League South status last term.
Paul Wotton, who oversaw their promotion to the league above us in the 2022-23 season, will be visiting the Ian Moorcroft Stadium next weekend as the newly appointed Torquay United boss. Former Macclesfield, Port Vale and York City boss John Askey has taken over the Truro reins.
He has managed to retain a strong core of players who have performed well for the Tinners (the White Tigers nickname has been dropped) including a talented string of players like influential captain Connor Riley Rowe, midfielder Will Dean and the deadly striking duo of Tyler Harvey and Andy ‘Rocky’ Neal.
Goalkeeper Dan Lavercombe has arrived from Taunton and these are exciting times for our opposition.
The unusual occurrence in pre- season of a game being abandoned because of a waterlogged pitch mean that Truro have had considerably less match-time than us although comfortable victories in the two games they have played - against our recent opponents Willand and Torpoint - mean they have hit the ground running.
Both were games played away and finished 6-0 at Torpoint and 4-1 at Willand.
It is very hard to draw conclusions in pre-season about how a team will fare when the competitive action begins, but Tiverton fan’s can be relatively upbeat with what they have witnessed so far. Lots of youngsters have been blooded by the management team and, for long spells, we have been good in possession, looked in decent physical shape, and players are slowly building up good relationships on the pitch.
With this being holiday season, players will be missing for games, but those who have deputised for more established team-mates have done themselves no harm at all with their displays and I am sure some have made strong cases for starting positions come August 10, when we begin the 2024-25 league campaign at Merthyr Town.
