A FAMILIAR face will take his place in the visiting dugout this weekend: a man who brings back many wonderful memories for our long standing followers and will forever be remembered for that FA Vase goal will be fulfilling his duties as Weston-super-Mare assistant manager in Saturday's friendly at Ladysmead.
In recent years, he was a permanent fixture in the home dugout as our assistant manager or manager and I am sure it will feel somewhat strange, come kick-off, for both himself and, indeed, Leigh Robinson who will be swapping dugouts from the days of those hotly contested local derbies between Tiverton and Taunton.
Despite this, no-one is more deserving of a warm welcome back to the Ian Moorcroft Stadium than the popular and personable Scott Rogers.
My association with the club is a lot more recent, but I am all too aware of a player who was part of so many historical moments for the Yellows, as fans recall those heady days to me.
Scott was part of the team who becalmed both Taunton and then Salisbury to win the play-off final, elevating Tiverton to the Step Three football that we currently play. He was then Martyn Roger’s Assistant Manager, before eventually becoming our Co-Manager and playing his part in establishing ourselves as a Southern League Premier Division side.
His playing days saw him enjoy an impressive non-league career in which he performed at the highest semi-pro level. A particularly impressive spell at Newport County for the talented midfielder, along with stints at the likes of Bath City, proved his worth and ability as a footballer.
Off the field, his enthusiasm and passion for the Yellows was never in question. Always willing to engage with fans and share or listen to opinions, he was always insightful.
He was proactively being involved in giving Tivvy a greater identity in the community, along with Paul Gray, by visiting local schools and junior sides and holding training sessions.
He always maintained that he had no problem with players bettering themselves, by testing themselves at a higher level than where we are competing. Maintaining these principles as a coach, he moved up a level when answering Scott Bartlett’s call to join him at Weston as assistant manager.
On Saturday, we welcome back Tivvy Legend Scott Rogers.
