TIVERTON Town joins with the Pitching In Southern League and the wider football family in mourning the death of League Chairman Anthony Hughes
A passionate and dedicated football man, Anthony became a League Director in June 2003 and Vice-President six years later, before returning as a League Director in 2015 after Merthyr Town returned as a Member Club
He was elected Vice-Chairman in 2017 and was the League’s FA Representative from 2016-2023 before becoming Southern League Chairman in 2022, which fulfilled a lifelong ambition for him, having spent his childhood watching the Southern League and embarking upon an association with his local club, Merthyr Town, which lasted for more than 30 years.
His involvement at Merthyr included being Club Secretary, Director, Board Member and, more importantly, a loyal supporter.
At the Southern League, his focus was on putting clubs first as well, as making the League as approachable, embracing and forward-thinking as possible. The game will be a much poorer place for his passing.
Our condolences go to Debbie, Victoria and Shaun, and all of Anthony’s family and friends.
We will hold a minute's applause for Anthony before Saturday's home game against Poole Town.
